Investigating a Common Good Fund for Skye and Raasay

Since 2022, we have been collaborating with Abundance, an organisation that promotes public-common strategies to democratise the economy and realise a just socio-ecological transition for everyone. This involves putting more economic power in the hands of organised communities and moving toward a society where everyone can live dignified lives within our planet’s ecological boundaries. They have worked with communities in various geographies to build models for Public-Common Partnerships. Together, we are exploring the establishment of a Common Good Fund specifically for our community that supports socially reparative and environmentally regenerative actions.
As part of Cooking Sections’ exhibition, In The Eddy of The Stream at the Royal Botanical Gardens Edinburgh, an initial workshop explores “Building the Intertidal Commons in Scotland”. Abundance (Dr. Kai Heron, Dr. Keir Milburn, and Dr. Bertie Russell) along with experts in land reform, land ownership and crofting, drew on the history of common ownership and governance in Scotland to create a series of imaginings that could form the basis for the development of new democratic, economic models in the Isle of Skye.
This work continues to evolve through interviews with local councillors, community trusts, residents and activists, site visits and conversations
